Juvederm, a treatment for static facial lines
My practice has branded itself as a regional leader in ophthalmology through innovations such as No-Blade Laser treatment with the IntraLase femtosecond laser in combination with the Allegretto Eye-Q excimer laser, and premium "no shot, no suture" cataract surgery featuring the ReStore and Crystalens implants. So often, patients would tell me their vision was so good, they now could see their wrinkles! Having utilized Botox since the early 1990's for the treatment of blepharospasm (involuntary muscular contraction of the eyelids), it was a natural progression to offer out patients cosmetic Botox treatments (see my blog dtd. 9/09)
As you know, Botox is used to soften so-called "dynamic" lines caused by persistent contraction of specific facial muscles. There are other types of age related lines on the face known as "static" lines. Static lines are the result of years of skin tension and relaxation, or just normal aging changes in facial contour resulting in heretofore "permanent" lines such as the "marionette lines" (Fig 10) that run from the corners of the mouth downward, and prominent nasolabia folds. (Fig 7) Other commonly seen static lines are the "elevens" seen between the eyebrows (Fig D2) and the "smokers' lines" (interestingly, smokers' lines are often seen in nonsmokers, who merely need a replenishment of their lip volume to re-establish the youthful horizontal and vertical "fullness") (Fig 8 & Fig 9)

Static facial lines may be remedied through the use of hyaluronic acid "fillers," such as Juvederm. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of our skin. When injected just under the surface of the skin, these agents provide a smoother, more vibrant appearance to the facial features. As these compounds are natural, they are naturally absorbed by the body over time.
